Six Southern Ontario teens charged with attempted murder in M'Chigeeng shooting

They're also facing a laundry list of other serious charges

Six teens from Southern Ontario have been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting in M'Chigeeng First Nation over the weekend.

At around 5:05 p.m. Feb. 2, police officers responded to a shooting incident in the Manitoulin Island community. A 20-year-old man and 16-year-old boy were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The response to the incident was a collaboration between United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police, the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service, the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation Police and the Greater Sudbury Police Service Tactical Unit.

OPP and UCCM Police assisted with a hold and secure of the community until there were no concerns for public safety.

OPP officers arrested four of the suspects in a stolen vehicle on Highway 6 in Little Current. OPP and UCCM Police arrested two additional suspects on M'Chigeeng First Nation.

The only adult charged in the case, an OPP press release said, was a 19-year-old Toronto man, who is facing charges of attempted murder using a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle and assault with a weapon.

Two teenage girls, a 17-year-old from Ajax and a 16-year-old from Toronto, were both charged with attempted murder using a firearm, break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

A 16-year-old boy from North York was charged with attempted murder using a firearm, break and enter with intent to use an indictable offence, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle and assault with a weapon.

Two other teenage boys, a 17-year-old from Brampton and a 17-year-old from Shelburne, are facing the same charges as their accomplice from North York, plus an additional charge of fail to comply with recognizance.

The accused are scheduled to appear in court in Wikwemikong on Feb. 6.
