The driver of a snowmobile involved in a collision on Ramsey Lake on Feb. 7 has succumbed to his injuries.

The name of the 17-year-old driver of the snowmobile has not been released. Constable Albert Lapalme of Greater Sudbury Police said it was expected the name would not be released at the request of family. Friends and media have identified the snowmobile driver as Mike Trevisiol.

The accident occurred on Ramsey Lake, near Portage Avenue, shortly past 6 p.m. on Sunday. The driver appeared to lose control of the snowmobile and struck an island, according to witnesses.

Nearby residents, who were ice fishing, contacted the police and assisted the emergency crews.

Constable Lapalme confirmed the driver was wearing a helmet.

This is the second teenage death in the Sudbury-North Bay area this year involving teenagers and snowmobiles. On Jan. 23, Mathieu Martin of Sturgeon Falls was killed after striking a pressure crack on Lake Nipissing. He was also wearing a helmet.

The accident is under investigation. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision is asked to phone the Traffic Management Unit at 675-9171.
