Greater Sudbury Police officers responded to a bear complaint Saturday morning in the vicinity of Lorne Street at Regent Street.

Officers were successful in treeing the bear. The Ministry of Natural Resources arrived on the scene and tranquilized the bear. The MNR will eventually relocate the bruin.

According to a press release, the call was difficult to manage due to the proximity to a multi-lane thoroughfare. As well, numerous individuals were attempting to get a close-up look at the 100 lb bear. This type of behaviour not only puts the people who are trying to view the bear at risk, but the officers managing the call as well.

Police ask that persons who observe bears wandering around the city, to maintain a safe distance and not put themselves at risk.

If you observe a bear and it is not an emergency, you are reminded to call the MNR Bear Hotline, 1-866-514-BEAR (2327).  You can also find more information on bears at www.bears.mnr.gov.on.ca
