At approximately 6 pm Aug. 28, Greater Sudbury Police spotted a stolen van in the Elmsview St. area of Hanmer.

When officers approached the van, it sped away, failing to stop for a number of stop signs and red lights. Police started to pursue the van but stopped for safety reasons.

The van continued through Blezard Valley, sideswiping another vehicle before racing away from the crash. Officers in the Rayside area spotted the vehicle, activated their emergency lights to give chase but again stopped the pursuit due the dangerous manner in which the vehicle was being driven. Using a spike belt, police were able to take out some of the tires but the vehicle continued driving towards downtown on the rims at speeds in excess of 100 km/h.

Once the vehicle arrived at the Beattie and Pine St. area, police say seven people bailed from the vehicle. Using the canine unit, police tracked down four of the seven suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to phone police or Crime Stoppers at 675-TIPS.
