Sudbury police announce new hiring, promotion

Frank Elsner, currently the Deputy Chief of Police with the Owen Sound Police Service, has been named as the successor to Deputy Chief James Cunningham, who is retiring from the force at the start of 2007.

Frank Elsner, currently the Deputy Chief of Police with the Owen Sound Police Service, has been named as the successor to Deputy Chief James Cunningham, who is retiring from the force at the start of 2007.

Cunningham has been Deputy Chief for the past 11 years. Dave Petryna, chair of the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board, made the announcement Dec. 7.

After a two month internal and provincial search,  Elsner was selected as the successful candidate based on his strong operational, administrative and leadership skills. According to a news release, Elsner has strong ties to Greater Sudbury and has actively participated in aboriginal and diversity programs.

Elsner is a 25-year police veteran with six and a half years as the Deputy Chief in Owen Sound. He began his career with the RCMP in 1982, moving to the Ontario Provincial Police in 1985 and then joined the Thunder Bay Police Service in 1987.

In other Greater Sudbury Police Services news, Allan Lekun has been promoted to the rank of superintendent effective Dec. 7.

Lekun, an 18-year member with the Greater Sudbury Police, has worked in numerous divisions throughout his career and has held supervisory and management positions in the uniform division, criminal investigation divisions and corporate services.
