Updated: Three people charged with attempted murder in Jan. 21 Espanola shooting

Three people have been charged with attempted murder in a shooting incident in Espanola Jan. 21.

The OPP say that a person suffered from a gunshot wound in the Albert Street incident, and was transported to hospital.

Witnesses observed numerous people running away from the house afterwards. The OPP and Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) Tactical Unit arrested three individuals a short time later in Lively.

A 19-year-old from Brampton was charged with:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder Using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm, contrary to section 239(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), and
  • Break, Enter a Place - With Intent to Commit Indictable Offence, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the CC.

 A 20-year-old from Markham was charged with:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder Using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm, contrary to section 239(1)(a) of the CC, and
  • Break, Enter a Place - With Intent to Commit Indictable Offence, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the CC.

An 18-year-old of no fixed address, was charged with:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder Using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm, contrary to section 239(1)(a) of the CC, and
  • Break, Enter a Place - With Intent to Commit Indictable Offence, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the CC.

All three accused appeared in bail court in Espanola Jan. 22, and were remanded into custody.

The OPP is asking for assistance in locating two persons of interest who left the residence after the shooting. The first person is described as a heavyset male, wearing light coloured cargo pants and a blue jacket with a hoodie. The second person is also described as male, wearing a brown jacket and a black toque.

The investigation remains ongoing with members of the OPP Manitoulin Detachment Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

On Thursday Jan. 21 at approximately 10:20 a.m. members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the OPP responded to a shooting incident on Albert Street in Espanola. 

A person suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. 

The three suspects believed to be involved in this incident then fled the area in a vehicle via Highway 17.

OPP immediately engaged the assistance of Greater Sudbury Police Service who deployed their tactical unit to assist.

 A short time later, the GSPS Tactical Unit arrested three individuals believed to be involved in the shooting while they were traveling in Lively. 

The investigation is ongoing with members of the OPP's Manitoulin Detachment Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP's Criminal Investigation Branch.

Assisting with this investigation was an OPP Critical Incident Commander, an OPP Community Street Crime Unit, an OPP Canine Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services.

Manitoulin OPP says the hold and secure at Espanola High School today is not related to the incident that occurred on Albert Street in Espanola. 

Police were called to the school for alleged threats made via social media. A school lockdown was called and police later located the student. 

OPP still haven't released any further information about the Albert Street incident.

Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police say they have three suspects in custody following an incident in Espanola today, but no information on the nature of that incident have been released as of yet.

While information is limited, Greater Sudbury Police Service said its Emergency Response Unit and members of the Integrated Crime Team (ICT) conducted a "high-risk" vehicle stop on Adam Street in Lively around 11:20 a.m. in relation to the incident in Espanola.

"The individuals were taken into custody without incident. There is no risk to public safety," GSPS tweeted.

Espanola High School also issued a hold and secure today, which means students and staff had to remain in their classrooms. However, neither police nor the school have confirmed if or how the hold and secure order is related to the arrest of the three suspects.
