Three residents of Wikwemikong First Nation were charged with possession of a controlled substance Sunday following a routine traffic stop in the Town of Espanola.
On March 1, at 9:39 a.m., a member of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police was on patrol when they initiated a traffic stop on Highway 6.
Further investigation revealed the occupants were in possession of suspected cocaine, said police in a press release, resulting in their arrest.
As a result of the investigation, a 37-year-old resident of Wikwemikong First Nation has been charged with the following:
- Possession of a Schedule I substance - Cocaine contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
- Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code (CC) contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) CC
- Drive while under suspension contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
- Speeding contrary to section 128 HTA
Two other residents of Wikwemikong First Nation, aged 25 and 32, were each charged with Possession of a Schedule I substance - Cocaine contrary to section 4(1) CDSA.
The accused have since been released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on April 6.
