Traffic police kept busy over holiday weekend

Over the holiday weekend, the Greater Sudbury Police Service's Traffic Management Unit conducted RIDE checks and enforcement throughout the city. No major traffic-related incidents or collisions were reported.

Over the holiday weekend, the Greater Sudbury Police Service's Traffic Management Unit conducted RIDE checks and enforcement throughout the city.  No major traffic-related incidents or collisions were reported. However, 341 vehicles and drivers were checked, resulting in the following:

- 17 people suspected of drinking and driving, eight of whichwere given 12-hour suspensions of their licence
- One person was charged with impaired driving.  Roger Arseneault, 56, of Sudbury was charged with blowing over .08.
- Eight Highway Traffic Act charges were laid
- Five novice drivers were given 12-hour suspensions and charged with having a blood alcohol content above zero.

On Friday evening, Ronald Heffern was charged with stunt driving, after being clocked on laser radar at 117 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone on Regent Street south.  Heffern had his vehicle impounded and licence suspended for seven days.

Thirty other people were charged with speeding.

On Monday evening, Francis McNamara, 42, of Sudbury, was operating a 1982 motorcycle on Bancroft Drive when he dropped the bike. He then requested assistance from a passerby, who noticed signs of impairment and called police.

McNamara was arrested for impaired driving and through investigation, was also charged with possession of stolen property (motorcycle), blowing over the legal limit and two counts of driving while under suspension.

He was scheduled to appear in bail court Tuesday morning.
