It must have been a loud wake-up call at 6:30 am July 13 when
the driver of a tractor trailer lost control of his rig while
navigating an off-ramp and landed onto a residential street in the
city's South End.
Carole Major says she heard an unfamiliar noise outside her
house at the end of the cul-de-sac on Goodview Rd.
The crash occurred on an off-ramp connecting Highway 17 E with
Highway 69 S. The tractor trailer went through the guard rail on
the off-ramp and crashed down an embankment and onto Goodview Dr.,
a residential cul-de-sac running parallel to Highway 69 S.
Major looked out her living room window to see a white transport
truck flying through the air as it lost control on the off-ramp.
"It rotated at least once in the air and then it went out
of sight in a pile of white smoke as it hit the ground,"
says Major.
Major said she called 911 and rushed out to the truck. She saw one
man lying on the rocky slope and the other climbing down from the
engine hood and making his way to his partner.
Both people in the tractor trailer went taken to hospital in
Sudbury by ambulance with undisclosed injuries. There were no other
injuries or damage done to any of the houses on the street.
"This is the second accident in the same spot. Right at
the lamppost, in October, a truck went over on its side with a load
of peppers," said Major.
The trucks' driver side was torn open spilling its load of
packages. Everything from basketballs to televisions were being
salvaged from the accident site.
There was also a small diesel spill. The Ministry of the
Environment has been notified of the spill.
The OPP are continuing the investigation and charges are
pending.
