A teenager who stole an expensive truck from a stranger's yard and then proceeded to cause more than $11,000 damage to the truck was sentenced to 90 days in jail Wednesday on top of two months he's already spent in custody.

Court heard Jesse Chartrand, 19, and an accomplice stole the late model truck from the driveway of a Sudbury man last July 26. They also stole fishing tackle and tools from the truck.

In early November, Chartrand was caught by police sitting in the passenger seat of another vehicle reported stolen from the Sudbury area.

Chartrand pleaded guilty to stealing the truck, occupying the second vehicle he knew was obtained through the commission of a crime and two breaches of court orders.

Greater Sudbury Police found the stolen truck in a bush area the day after it was reported missing. The truck has sustained severe damage and several missing fishing rods and reels and tools were also missing.

Police received information Chartrand may have been involved in stealing the truck and when they stopped him in November and questioned him, he admitted his role in that incident, said assistant Crown attorney Guy Roy.

Chartrand does have a criminal record and in all the circumstances another 90 days in jail on top of time he's already spent in custody would be an appropriate sentence, said Roy.

Justice Randall Lalande agreed.
