Two people from Manitoulin Island were killed in a collision on Hwy. 17 Saturday when their car crossed the centre lane, striking an on-coming tractor trailer head-on.

The car's driver, Nancy Ann Dunlop, 54, of Sheguiandah and her back-seat passenger, Arla Thibault, 63, of Gore Bay were both killed in the collision.

The third passenger in the car, Cameron Thibault, 62, also from Gore Bay, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was air-lifted to St. Joseph's Health Centre in Sudbury.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Sharon Howell, 54, and her passenger, Randolph Howell, 54, who was asleep at the time of the crash, weren't injured. The pair was from Red Deer, Alberta.

Police are still unsure why the car crossed the centre lane and are continuing their investigation.
