Meet the farmer: Allison Muckle and her large English black pigs

"We raise English Large Black pigs from farrow to finish with the utmost care and respect, giving them every opportunity to do what pigs do best: root, wallow, socialize, sunbathe and lay in the shade"

Meet farmer Allison Muckle. She is supplying the hot dogs and sausages for this Saturday's fundraising barbecue to support Eat Local Sudbury from the free-range, heritage breed

Rowantree Farms is located on 157 acres of forest, rock and pasture here in Sudbury, producing free-range, heritage breed pork for sale direct to customers and through select stores, according to the farm's website.

"We raise English Large Black pigs from farrow to finish with the utmost care and respect, giving them every opportunity to do what pigs do best: root, wallow, socialize, sunbathe and lay in the shade," the website states. "Our pigs are fed certified non-GMO, Ontario-grown feed from Maitland Valley Naturals. We do not use any sub-therapeutic antibiotics or growth promotants.

"Our sows give birth naturally in a big nest of straw and hay, without the use of farrowing crates. We do not clip teeth and tails, and we do not castrate our male piglets."

You can taste the fruit of this labour on Saturday, when Eat Local Sudbury hosts a fundraising barbeque as part of the Sudbury Earth Day Festival. Not only will patrons enjoy a tasty lunch in support of the Co-op, but will also get to meet the farmer who provided the food for the event.
