Busy weekend for LU athletes

The Laurentian University women's soceer team finally lost a game.

On Sunday, Oct. 17, the Lady Vees were bounced 2-0 by the University of Toronto Blues on the road.

This ended their eight-game undefeated streak, which saw the team allow only one goal against during that time.

"It's a hard loss," said head coach Rob Gallo in a press release. "We tried to open it up after the first goal, but they managed to score for the second time."

The Lady Vees were also in action this past Saturday against York University. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

The game marked the first time an opposing team was able to score on the Lady Vees' goaltenders.

Kristy MacKenzie scored for the Lady Vees.

The women are now third in the OUA North Division with a 3-1-5 record, good for 13 points.

They're two points behind the University of Toronto for second place, and a home playoff berth.

The squad is back in action this weekend against Nipissing University in North Bay. Game time is 3 pm.

The men's squad went undefeated this past weekend, keeping hopes of a home playoff game alive.

On Sunday, they toppled Toronto 2-0.

Sudbury's Guiseppe Politi and Ryan Baker scored for the Voyageurs.

The win was huge, as it pulled Laurentian to within one point of Toronto, and the home playoff berth.

"It was a great game all around," said head coach Carlo Castrechino in a press release. "Team defence was really incredible, despite having only 13 players."

Laurentian stands with a 4-4-1 record, good for 13 points in the OUA North Division. Toronto is one point ahead, with 14.

The men were also in action this past Saturday, tying York University 1-1. Politi scored for Laurentian.

The Voyageurs get back in action this weekend, as they face Nipissing University in North Bay. Game time is slated for 1 pm.

The Lady Vees cross-country running team wrapped up their regular season this past Saturday at the Queen's University meet with great results.

Sudbury's Leila Angrand finished first first among university runners in the five-kilometre event with a time of 19:13.

Laurentian rookie Kristi Dolson finished sixth among university runners, while veteran Melanie Muise finished 33rd, Jennie Oliver,35th, Marnie Smith, 42nd, Caitlin Tino, 50th, and Sheryl Neal, 55th.

The Lady Vees finished fourth overall with 165 points.

They now prepare for OUA Championships, which will be held in Toronto on Oct. 30.

On Sunday, Oct. 17, the Laurentian swim teams beat the Brock Badgers in their second meet of the season.

The men won 128-93, while the women won 144-98.

The men were led by sophomore superstar Marshall Bonner, who finished first in 50-metre backstroke, 100-metre backstroke and 100-metre butterfly.

Elisha James led the women with three first place finishes in the 50-metre backstroke, 50-metre breaststroke and the 50-metre butterfly.

The teams are back in the pool on Sunday, Oct. 31 against the University of Waterloo.
