The Collège Boréal Vipères golf team distinguished itself at the OCAA (Ontario College Athletic Association) annual tournament last week by bringing home the bronze medal after a well-fought battle for the silver.

The best golfers from all 24 community colleges across the province met in Morrisburg Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 to determine this year's standings.

The students from Collège Boréal once again stepped up to the plate at the Upper Canada Golf and Country Club. New recruit Alexandre Piquette led the opening round with a score of 78, followed by a final round of 83 for a combined score of 161 over the two days.

Third-year veteran Shane Silvestri shot the lowest overall score for the team at 160. At the same event, Jesse-Ross Larochelle shot a total 173, followed by Patrick Miron, who scored 174. Geoffrey Trépanier came within two strokes of winning the tie-breaker for the silver medal.

René Grandmaison, head coach of both the men's and women's golf teams at Collège Boréal, expressed his pride at the team's performance.

"I believe that this second provincial medal won by our men's team, speaks to the talent, consistency and especially the potential of our players. We missed the silver medal by a hair, but you can be sure that we will be back in the hunt next year."

Besides the coach and assistant coach, Alain Larocque (also a professor at the college), the men's team is comprised of five players as well as a substitute. They competed in a 36-hole stroke play format in which the best four individual scores are combined for a total overall team score.

As a result, the Vipères obtained a total score of 668, an improvement of 34 strokes over last year, bringing home the second division bronze medal.
