Cubs celebrate big season, hand out yearly awards

Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champions, the Greater Sudbury Cubs, handed out their yearly awards this week.

Back from the Centennial Cup, the Cubs “celebrated an amazing season” this week after claiming Sudbury’s first junior hockey championship in 16 years. 

The team said the Cubs are the first Sudbury-based hockey franchise to win a game at the national championships in the last 24 years. 

Team co-captain Oliver Smith picked up three awards: Top Scorer, Best Two-Way Forward and Most Valuable Player.

“The former Barrie Colt led the Cubs offensively this season with 103 points to set a franchise scoring record,” the team said in a news release. 

Goaltender Noah Metivier was named both the NOJHL MVP and the Cubs MVP for his sensational play during the playoffs.

  • Premier Equipment Finance Best Two-Way Forward: Oliver Smith 
  • Topper’s Pizza Top Scorer Award: Oliver Smith 
  • Brokerlink Insurance Best Defenceman Award: Josh Kavanagh 
  • Anmar Mechanical Top Rookie Award: Hudson Chitaroni 
  • Technica Mining Most Improved Player Award: Ben Harris 
  • Skater’s Edge Hardest Working Player Award: Hudson Martin 
  • Bianco’s Supercentre Best Defensive Defenceman: Mason Chitaroni 
  • Rogers Wireless Community Service Award: Brady Bouchard 
  • Blaine Smith Family Leadership Award: Cameron Walker 

“The Cubs organization would like to express a sincere thank you to everyone that provided support to the Cubs players and team, and made the 2023-24 season one for the decades,” the team said. 

Greater Sudbury now looks ahead to the 2024-25 season, during which they will defend their NOJHL title. The team hosts its 2024-25 Prospect Camp on June 1-2 at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
