The Greater Sudbury Cubs continue to be ranked among the top 10 junior hockey clubs in the country by the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

And their ongoing winning ways are helping them stay there.

The Cubs recorded two more victories last week including a 4-2 win over the Elliot Lake Red Wings on Friday night and a 3-2 victory over the Powassan Voodoos on Thursday night. The victories give the Cubs 64 points

on the season and an 11-point lead over the second-place Thunderbirds in the NOJHL’s Western Conference.

The Cubs lead the Timmins Rock by five points for first-place overall in NOJHL league standings.

Meanwhile, Cubs’ star forward Pierson Sobush and his hot-hand secured his 30th goal of the season in Elliot Lake on Jan. 13.

“The local forward now sits in fourth place in league scoring and leads the league in goals scored,” the club said in a news release. “Pierson has now moved up into the Top 10 in most goals scored from across all nine Junior A leagues from across the country and sits tied for seventh  place in CJHL goal scoring.”

The Cubs are looking for their seventh consecutive victory when they host the French River Rapids on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Local product Samuel Assinewai was named an Eastlink Star of the Week this past week for notching two more goals and adding an assist. Assinewai was named the game’s second star on Thursday night with a goal and one assist in a 3-2 victory over Powassan. Assinewai then scored again in Elliot Lake to give the star forward nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in just 16 games.
