Breaking records and defying odds all season long, the Sudbury Five have another reason to celebrate, with guard Jaylen Bland being named NBL Canada's Newcomer of the Year.

The Newcomer of the Year award is given to the most outstanding player in his first season with the National Basketball League of Canada, as voted by teams themselves.

The 26-year-old guard from Sanignaw, Mich., proved to be one of the Five's most versitile players, averaging 18.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, in the 29 games this season.

Right at home amoung the league's leading offence, Bland scored the third most three pointers in the league, averaging 4.6 3PT/G for a total of 133 over the course of the year.

“Since turning pro, Jaylen has been one of the best three-point shooters around the globe,” said head coach and GM Logan Stutz.

"Jaylen has been a big piece of our success this season, and we couldn’t be happier to have him recognized by the league."
