Hello OHL fans! As always, the boys in the
OHL are giving a tremendous effort, and there's no shortage of
news, so let's jump right into it.
Former Sudbury Wolves' player Marty Doyle is
causing quite the ruckus in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey
League (QMJHL). Doyle leads the
league in penalty minutes with 130 through 31
games. Doyle played six games for the Wolves last season.
He would be a great fit with the Wolves again
this season, as they still lead the league in penalty minutes
with a staggering 702 in 27 games (all statistics quoted don't
include Wednesday night's game in Sault Ste. Marie between the
Wolves and Greyhounds).
Speaking of penalties, the Wolves clash with
the Sarnia Sting tonight at the Sudbury Arena, who just happen
to be second in the league in penalty minutes with 635 in 27
games.
It should prove to be a rough-and-tumble
affair.
The Sting have struggled this season, posting
a 8-15-3-1 record.
They made a blockbuster trade earlier this
year with the Mississauga IceDogs acquiring disgruntled
forward, and former Wolves player Brad Efthimiou, winger Chad
Painchaud, defenceman Chris Chimienti and two draft picks for
Dan Carcillo, John Hecimovic and defenceman Dave
Pszenyczny.
The trade hasn't helped either team out that
much. Sarnia still hasn't caught fire, even though Efthimiou
has 11 goals and 18 points in 15 games. The Sting sit fourth in
the West Division with 20 points. The IceDogs are second in the
Central Division with 27 points.
The trade has been nothing less than a
disaster for the IceDogs. Just three games into his IceDog
career, Carcillo was suspended for 15 games for a stick
incident. He's eligible to return tonight.
Hecimovic has only played three games as
well, recording three points. He just returned this past
weekend after an injury forced him to the sidelines. Pszenyczny
has a minus six rating in 14 games with the IceDogs.
If Carcillo and Hecimovic can turn around
their seasons, the IceDogs could be an offensive force,
especially with superstar Patrick O'Sullivan leading the
charge.
Hats off to the OHL squad that pummeled the
Russian Selects team in the ADT Canada Russia Challenge.
Our boys beat the Russians in both games by
scores of 3-1 and 5-2. Wolves' sniper Ben Pouliot scored in the
second game on Monday night and had
two assists in the first contest. Marc Staal,
the other Wolves' player participating, looked solid in his
role.
Speaking of former Wolves, Craig Voakes has
turned into a reliable offensive player with the Kitchener
Rangers. In 20 games, Voakes has 12 goals and 30 points, and
the Rangers are making a strong case to be a contender this
year because of Voakes' efforts.
In case you haven't noticed, there's another
red-hot team burning up the standings. The Owen Sound attack
have fashioned a record of 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, and
have taken over second spot in the Midwest Division with 35
points.
It's still early, but there's a great race
shaping up for the goal scoring crown.
London's Rob Schremp leads the league with 24
goals in 26 games. In hot pursuit is Erie's Geoff Platt with 23
goals in 25 games. Both snipers have a legitimate shot at
scoring 50-plus goals each. It will be fun to watch.
Kingston Frontenacs' winger Anthony Stewart
was named OHL Player of the Week, after scoring six goals and
nine points in three games.
Stewart and the rest of the Frontenacs will
be in Sudbury on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Game time is 7:30 pm.
