The best and the brightest female high school
basketball players took to the court Monday night at Lockerby
Composite School to test their skills in the High School
All-Star Challenge.
The 21 players were split into two squads,
one coached by Lasalle Secondary School coach Jen Bourget and
the other by Lo-Ellen Park Secondary coach Yves Poirier.
Team Bourget downed Team Poirier 54 -
48.
High scorers in the game for Team Bourget
featured Lasalle's Sarah Lazarus with 14 points and Lisa
Furchner with 13 points.
The high scorer from Team Poirier was
Marymount's Ryan Faiella with 14 points.
Local teams do very well in
Silver Stick tournament
The 35th annual Silver Stick Hockey
Tournament wrapped up this past weekend with some remarkable
results for local clubs.
The Valley East Rebels won the Novice 'A'
Division with a 4-0 win over the Walden Red Devils.
Cray Roberge was named the game's MVP after
scoring three goals in the championship game.
The Copper Cliff Redmen won the Novice 'AA'
Division with a 1-0 win over the Sudbury SST Lakers.
Denver Ghent scored the game's lone
goal.
The Rayside Balfour Tigers won the Major Atom
'A' Division with a 3-1 victory over the Walden Red
Devils.
Mitchell Byrne scored two goals to lead the
way for the Tigers.
The Valley East Rebels won the Major Bantam
'A' Division thanks to a 5-2 victory over the Manitoulin
Panthers.
The Copper Cliff Redmen won the Minor Bantam
'AA' Division with a 6-0 win over the Timmins Girones.
Copper Cliff's Marcus Foligno, son of Sudbury
Wolves' coach and GM Mike Foligno, scored three goals to lead
the Redmen to victory.
The Rayside Balfour Tigers won the Minor
Bantam 'A' Division thanks to a 6-2 win over the Goulbourn
Rams.
Tigers' Kory Caya scored twice in the
win.
All winners from the Silver Stick regional
tournament now move on in their respective divisions to the
International Silver Stick Tournament, against other regional
winners.
There are different host cities during
different weekends over the next several weeks.
Sabrecats busy team in NOJHL
action
It's going to be a busy final week before the
teams and players who compete in the Northern Ontario Junior
Hockey League take a much-needed break over the holiday
season.
The schedule continues tonight (Wednesday)
with the rejuvenated Sudbury Northern Wolves hosting their
crosstown rival, Rayside Balfour Sabrecats, at 7:30 pm at the
McClelland Arena.
The Northern Wolves broke out last week with
a 12-2 thrashing of the Blind River Beavers after announcing
Brian McGillis had taken over from Wayne Goudreault as the new
head coach.
Tonight's game is a big one as Rayside leads
Sudbury by only four points in the battle for third and fourth
place in their division.
In other league action tonight, Blind River
visits Northern Michigan at the Little Bear Arena with game
time at 7:30 pm .
The busy week for the Sabrecats continues
Thursday as they host Northern Michigan Black Bears. Game time
is 7:30 pm at the Chelmsford Arena.
On Saturday evening, the Sabrecats make it
three games in four nights as they pay a visit to Blind River
to take on the Beavers. Game time at the
Blind River Community Centre is 7:30
pm.
