The win was historic as it was the first Ontario Cup win by a girls' team from Sudbury.

The Sudbury team dispatched the defending champion Oshawa Kicks 3-1 in the semifinal, which surprised many as the Kicks featured two national players and four provincial players and they were the favourites to win.

"We are pioneers," said an elated head coach Giuseppe Politi. "The heavily touted Kicks team...was expected to win. Our team kept to the system we've implemented and it paid dividends."

Sudbury showed their true spirit.

"Sudbury took their opposition by surprise playing with a tremendous amount of heart and desire," said team media rep Angie Corelli.

"This stamps Sudbury on the provincial soccer map. Although teams have participated in high levels, this championship is highly visible and tangible. It should provide motivation to other aspiring Sudbury teams who want to compete at the highest level in the province. Where there's a will, there's a way, " said Politi.

The title should also pay even more dividends down the road when the team resumes play in the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) outdoor league this summer.

"It's a huge confidence booster for our girls," said Politi. "Three of the teams we played against are going to be competition this summer in the OYSL and our record against them was two wins and one tie. The girls know they can not only compete, as was our past goal, but we can win."
