Lady Vees goalkeeper Meghan Hoffberg and golf team captain John Atherton have been named Laurentian's Keg Steakhouse and Bar athletes of the week for the period of September 29 to October 5, 2008.

Hoffberg, (Brampton, Ont.) came up big on numerous occasions for the Lady Vees in their huge 2-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Saturday.

She made five saves including a couple late in the game to preserve the victory, shutout and coveted three points. The Lady Vees co-captain is in her fourth year of Concurrent Education and is the team's starting goalie for the second straight year; she has not disappointed.

"Meghan is a competitor she has been a top level keeper throughout her goalkeeping career, when the game is on the line we are confident that Meghan will backstop us to a win," said head coach Rob Gallo in a release.

Atherton (Toronto) finished tied for second overall, while the Voyagers finished fourth as a team at the Waterloo Invitational at Whistle Bear Golf Club this weekend.

Atherton, the third year Sports Administration student fired an opening round 73 and backed it up with a one under 71 on a gusty second day of competition.

The former OUA second team all star looks to make his mark as an elite golfer in the OUA ranks, and made a huge step in doing so this weekend. This was Atherton's first competitive event since he competed in U.S. Amateur at world famous Pinehurst Golf Resort in August.

He also became the first golfer ever to represent Laurentian at the RCGA Canadian University/College Golf Championships in Victoria this spring.

Atherton had no time to bask in the success of the Waterloo Invitational as his Voyageurs golf team competeed at the Guelph Invitational on Monday, October 6; then will travel back to Waterloo to play in the Laurier Invitational on October 14.

Hoffberg and her Lady Vees will not get time to enjoy the turkey over Thanksgiving as they play a pair of games on the road. Saturday, October 11, they will take on the Trent Excalibur in Peterborough, while Sunday, October 12 they take on the nationally number four ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
