The Laurentian University swim teams, Nordic
ski teams and basketball squads had a tremendous weekend, with
numerous medals, record-breaking performances and playoff
positions earned.
The Laurentian women's basketballs squad
earned a home playoff game with two victories over the
weekend.
The Lady Vees clinched third place in the
Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East Division, and will host
the Ryerson Rams Wednesday evening at the Ben Avery Gymnasium
in a sudden-death, must-win game.
The Lady Vees are 2-0 against the Rams in
regular season play. Game time is 7 pm.
The women had much to celebrate this past
weekend besides a playoff berth, as Cassandra Carpenter broke
the OUA record for most points scored in a single season.
Carpenter entered the weekend 47 points short of tying the mark
of 418, held by York's Karen Jackson.
Carpenter needed an major offensive outburst
to claim the record in her last two games, and she delivered
with authority.
Against Royal Military College, Carpenter was
unbelievable as she posted 39 points in a 102-40 win.
Carpenter then dumped in 17 points against
Queen's University on Saturday to set the new OUA record of
427 points.
Capenter's reign at the top could be
short lived as Brock University's Jodie Ebeling has 413
points with one game to play on Wednesday against Wilfrid
Laurier.
Ebeling could surpass Carpenter, as she is
averaging 19.67 points per game this season.
The men's team also got into the playoff
picture with a 73-62 win over Queen's on Saturday in
Kingston. The men finished in sixth spot in the OUA East
Division, and will hit the road for their playoff game against
University of Ottawa on Saturday, Feb 19.
The Voyageurs are 1-1 against Ottawa this
season.
The Laurentian Nordic ski teams took to the
trials of North Bay this past weekend for the OUA
Championships, and the teams skied away with an impressive
medal haul.
Overall, the men finished second, while the
women finished third.
Rob Bewick was the big winner, having two
silver medals hung around his neck for his efforts in the
men's 10 kilometre skate and the 15-km classic. Bewick also
finished second overall in combined time, and was named an OUA
All-Star.
On the women's side, Emily Morel claimed
a bronze medal in the women's five-km skate, and finished
fourth overall in combined time, while earning an OUA All-Star
spot.
Phil Wood and Carley Kenwell also were named
to OUA All-Star squads.
The Laurentian swim teams made waves at the
OUA Championships at Brock University this past weekend as
well.
The men finished fourth overall, and the
women placed sixth overall, but both squads featured plenty of
medal worthy performances.
On the men's side, Marshall Bonner was on
fire, winning gold in the 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre
backstroke. Bonner also won a bronze in the 4X50-metre
freestyle relay with Emmanual Angrand, Willie Paul and Colin
Jenkins.
The same four also won a bronze in the
4X100-metre freestyle relay.
Jenkins also won a silver in the 400-metre
individual medley, and Ryan Smith won a bronze in the same
event.
On the women's side, Stephanie Kuhn won a
bronze in the 100-metre freestyle.
