The Greater Sudbury Soccer Club will host its second annual Great North Winter Classic soccer

tournament this weekend at the Lancer Dome Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3.

The tournament will include teams throughout the northeast region vying for the championship banners in the under 13 to under 18 boys and girls divisions. It will feature the best six on six indoor soccer players in the region.

The tournament will start with an opening ceremony at 8:50 a.m. on March 2 and will feature an opening address from Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre.

“We are eager to bring the north together in the winter again under one bubble for a weekend of good sportsmanship and camaraderie,” said Joe Snofl, club president, in a release from the soccer club.

The tournament has grown since its inception one year ago, said lead organizer Dino Moretta, in the release. “Last year we had 21 teams participate,” he said. “This year we have jumped to 34 teams from all over the province.”

Teams from Ottawa, Darlington, Sault Ste. Marie, Nipissing, Barrie and Muskoka will take over the dome along with homegrown teams from Greater Sudbury.

A draft of the agenda and schedule of play will be shared once finalized.
