A+ Performer
Lo-Ellen Park football player Bryan Babic. At the start of the
season, a big focus was on Lo-Ellen's big three of Kyle Cooper,
Brett Walter and Jordyn Andric. Babic has come out of nowhere
and stole all the thunder. Babic has been nothing short of
remarkable in his first three games, rushing for 541 yards,
receiving another 37 yards in the air and scoring four
touchdowns. Overall, Babic had 578 all purpose yards. He has
been a one-man wrecking crew. (Note: Babic and Lo-Ellen played
last Friday, but due to press deadlines, statistics were
unavailable.)
Cross-country running
Junior, midget and senior runners from across the Sudbury high
school district will converge on Laurentian University today at
3 pm, to contest the 2007 SDSSAA city championships.
Vying for aggregate honours will be Lo-Ellen and Lockerby, as
the last time another school's name appeared on the grand
aggregate trophy was back in 1995 when Lasalle captured the
banner. Races get underway at 3 pm.
Here's some key athletes to watch for.
Lo-Ellen's Ross Proudfoot, junior boys. He has the best shot at
being Top 10 at OFSAA - coming off two fifth place finishes at
OFSAA track last spring.
Lockerby's Chantry Cargill, senior boys. He could be in the
hunt for a city championship.
Lo-Ellen's Katie Maziarski, senior girls. She's
definitely a top runner in the city and has good shot at making
OFSAA.
Winners and qualifiers move onto the NOSSA Championships, which
will be held in Sault Ste. Marie at White Pines high school on
Oct. 26. Winners and qualifiers from that championship move on
to the OFSAA Championships. This year's OFSAA Championships
will be held in Niagara Falls at Fireman's Park on Saturday,
Nov. 3.
Senior boys' football
Barn burner of the schedule: Confederation versus Lockerby at
L'Heritage field on Thursday. Game time is 3:30 pm. These two
teams have a history and play one another with relentless
passion. Lockerby started the season 2-1. (They played last
Friday against Lo-Ellen, but because of the Long Weekend and
press times, results were unavailable.)
The Vikings are strong on defence as usual, but they feature a
potent offence led by potential first team all-star quarterback
Chris Sampson. The team is also swelling with talent at almost
every position. They're a veteran team and hungry to win.
Confederation has started the season 2-2. They were beat by
Notre-Dame last week 14-10.
Head coach Brandon Dougan will have his boys in prime condition
as he doesn't want to see the Chargers go under the .500 mark.
Confederation is another veteran filled squad. They have key
weapons on offence such as running back Mike Switzer and wide
receivers Matt Mott and Jonathan Beeson. It will be a classic
power struggle as two of the big contending teams slug it out
for one of the top spots.
At 7:30 pm, Lo-Ellen hosts Notre-Dame. Lo-Ellen went 2-1 in
their first three games. They're a well-rounded club with high
expectations. Notre-Dame has surprised this season with strong
efforts. The Alouettes are the team to watch. They've gotten
better with each passing game. Notre-Dame forged a record of
3-1 in their first four games and have shown they're the real
deal after disposing of Confederation last week. Watch for
rusher Eric Roque. He's not the biggest guy, but he's fast and
determined. In his first three games, Roque rumbled for 370
yards and three touchdowns. Although not a barn burner, this
Lo-Ellen versus Notre-Dame match will ignite fans with great
action.
