Laurentian University women's soccer player Caitlin Kelly has set a tough act for herself to follow.
As a rookie, Kelly exploded into the OUA, scoring five goals
in 15 games and helping the Lady Vees to their best record in
club history.
The fiery forward showed incredible passion and skill, netting
the most goals ever by a Lady Vees rookie.
Yet, Kelly isn't going to hide behind the curtain or rest on her laurels. She's planning on elevating her game a few more notches and continuing to surprise foes in the league.
Kelly likes the idea of her encore being difficult. She
relishes the thought of accepting more responsibilities and
making a bigger impact.
Kelly will have added pressure of not just elevating her game,
but learning a new position.
Because of her talents, Kelly will move from the forward spot to the middle/centre position.
"It's a challenge I'm actually looking forward to a lot," said the 19-year-old. "I've never played that position before. I'm ready for it...it can only make me a better all-around player."
Potting five goals last season created a wave of momentum
for Kelly.
"It gave me a lot of confidence...especially heading into this
year," said the Peterborough native. "I didn't even think I
would get off the bench last season. I started by the third
game...and never really looked back."
Kelly dealt with numerous injuries last season, most notably
two sprained ankles. The injuries didn't keep her out of
the lineup.
"I did miss one game, but it was because I had too many yellow
cards," said the five-foot-eight player. "I went to
physiotherapy, but there was no way I was missing games because
of injuries. I had worked hard to become a starter and
wasn't giving it up. I hate sitting and watching. I have to
compete."
The Laurentian coaching staff is anticipating a strong
campaign out of Kelly.
"Caitlin has a lot of talent and potential that hasn't been
tapped yet," said head coach Rob Gallo. "Through the maturing
process of being another year older, we're going to see
another level of play come out of her."
Kelly is gushing with abilities and combines it with
spirited play.
"She's very tenacious and doesn't back down from
anyone," said Gallo. "She can connect and move on the ball.
She's confident with the ball and has no fear about taking
people one-on-one. We expect her to continue to help provide
offence and get the attack going."
In her first 10 games, Kelly scored four goals to pace Laurentian.
