The Laurentian women's soccer team have done the training, picked their team and are now set to open the 2008 OUA regular season against their northern rivals from North Bay, the Nipissing Lakers.
The game is set for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2 at the Laurentian Soccer Fields.
The Lady Vees are coming off two solid performances in Montreal last weekend, where they outscored their opponents a combined 4-0 and saw strong play from both rookies and veteran players. The Laurentian women will need the same consistent strong play from all players to come away victorious in their home opener.
Solid defence and a quick counterattack will be important to the Lady Vees' success. They will also need to put pressure on the Nipissing defenders and then take advantage of their miscues and capitalize on their chances.
The Lady Vees will need to pay attention to Nipissing's 2007 leading scorer, third year midfielder Alexandra Instance (Pembroke, Ont.) who had three goals last season.
They will also need to be aware of second year midfielder Stephanie Stubbertt (North Bay, Ont.) and third year striker Didiane Chollet (Alexandria, Ont.) who both tallied two goals last season.
"We have a collection of individuals that work very well as a team and will commit themselves to the task at competing hard and trying to win every game," said head coach Rob Gallo, in a release.
In 2007, the Lady Vees went 1-0-1 against Nipissing, playing to a 1-1 draw in Sudbury in the first game and taking a 2-1 decision in North Bay in their second meeting of the season.
The Lady Vees will play the second game of all double-headers this year with their home opener set for Tuesday, September 2 at 2 p.m. at the Laurentian soccer fields.
