The Laurentian University women's soccer team
has reached a critical point in the season, with a slippery
destiny in their hands.
Coming into the final game of the regular
season, the women, through their trademark tough defence, have
placed themselves with the potential to grab an opening round
home playoff contest.
To do so, they will need Lady Luck on their
side.
The women are currently sitting in third spot
in the OUA North Division with 13 points. They're only one
point behind the University of Toronto, and firmly in second
place.
"As much as I had hoped that the last game
would mean nothing, unfortunately, it does," said head coach
Rob Gallo. "We need to win, and hope Toronto loses to Guelph
and York. If they do, and we win, we will get second place and
host McMaster. If not, we're on the road next Thursday for a
game on Friday at either Guelph or Brock."
Last weekend, the Lady Vees finally allowed a
goal against, after playing seven games without being scored
on. It had no damaging effect on the team's psyche.
With goal scoring at a premium all season,
Gallo is looking for his strikers to start finding the net more
as the playoffs approach.
The Lady Vees want to enter the playoffs on a
positive note.
"We're certainly excited about entering the
playoffs for only the second time in our five-year history,"
said Gallo. "We want to do well in this last game and set the
tone for the playoffs.
The Lady Vees game time in North Bay is 3
pm.
