Lady Vees steal gold from Gaels

The Laurentian Lady Vees soccer team made a clean sweep in Kingston Sunday, as they defeated the Queen's Gaels in a tight 1-0 match.

Rookie forward, Lisa Watson, notched her second goal in as many games for the Vees, while veteran Meghan Hoffberg recorded the shutout.

In a playoff-like atmosphere at Richardson Stadium, the two sides battled hard, each looking to net the all important first tally and swing the tide in their favour. Ultimately it was rookie, Watson (Newmarket) who broke the tie in the sixteenth minute, silencing the boisterous crowd while giving the Lady Vees the lead and a surge of momentum, which they would carry through to the end of the half.

The second half saw more of the same solid play from both teams, with the hometown Gaels seeking to claw their way back. The Laurentian women did an excellent job of sharing the ball and creating opportunities on the offensive end while the defensive tandem of veterans, Erica Duczeminski (Sudbury) and Samantha Falcioni (Sudbury), and strong play from goal keeper, Meghan Hoffberg (Brampton), kept the Gaels off the score sheet. The win was the Lady Vees' first ever at Richardson Stadium.

"The girls played a really good game of soccer today, and they're fun to watch," said head coach, Rob Gallo in a release. "This was a really enjoyable weekend, especially with both the men and women winning, and coming home with twelve points."

The Lady Vees will be in action next weekend as they travel to the nation's capital where they will square off against a pair of CIS ranked squads - the Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton Ravens. The Lady Vees will take to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. against the sixth-ranked Gee Gees, and Sunday at 2:15 p.m. against the number seven team in the nation, the Carleton Ravens.
