Laurentian University swimmers looking to create tidal waves at nationals

Eight members of the Laurentian Voyageurs swim teams are heading off to the 2005 CIS Swim Championship in Edmonton, AB. The four men and four women will compete in three days of swimming from Feb. 25 to 27.

Marshall Bonner is just one of eight Laurentian swimmers competing at the CIS Championships in Edmonton this weekend.
Representing the Laurentian men's squad will be captains Willie Paul and Ryan Smith, along with second year swimmers Colin Jenkins and Marshall Bonner.

Bonner is coming off a double gold medal performance at the 2005 OUA Swim Championship at Brock University. Marshall will be looking to crack finals in both the 50-metre backstroke and 100-metre backstroke.

Jenkins and Smith will also be looking for Top-eight standings in the 400-metre individual medley and 200-metre backstroke. Jenkins and Smith placed in the silver and bronze medal positions respectively at the OUA Swim Champs two weeks ago in the 400 IM.

Paul will be looking to finish off his 5-year varsity career in style with finals in both the 100-metre fly and 200-metre freestyle events.

On the women's side, representing Laurentian will be team captain Erin O'Neil, second year swimmer Stephanie Kuhn, rookie Dominique Lafleur and third year swimmer Alicia Kaye.

Kuhn will be looking make the finals in the 100-metre freestyle, 50-metre fly and 100-metre freestyle events. Kuhn is fresh off a bronze medal performance in the 100-metre freestyle at the OUA Swim Championships two weeks ago at Brock.

O'Neill will have similar aspirations and is competing in the 400-metre individual medley, 200-metre fly and 800-metre freestyle events.

Lafleur will be able to test the waters at her first ever CIS National Swim Championships.

Lafleur will be competing in the 100-metre fly, 200-metre fly and 200-metre individual medley events.

Kaye caps off the Lady Vees 2005 CIS team and will be used to add the final piece to what should be some strong relay performances in Edmonton. Kaye will be swimming the 100-metre freestyle, 200-metre freestyle and 100-metre breaststroke events for the relays.

Competition begins Friday, Feb. 25 at 10 am in Edmonton and wraps up on Sunday, Feb. 27.
