In sports, winning is important, but it isn't the only
thing.
The Lasalle Lancers senior girls' basketball program is more
than just another sport for kids to participate in. They live
it and the coaches hope every girl graduates knowing they have
become not just a better athletes, but a better people overall.
"Basketball is just a tool," said co-coach Mary Collinson. "A tool to try and teach these young people work ethics, values and morals that you need in life. Sports is fantastic and a great avenue for young people to pursue. It teaches them about dedication, team work, camaraderie and relationships. Developing those things is important and it's something they can carry with them for the rest of their lives."
The Lancers include everyone. Each player has a specific role
and is encouraged to expand it and do their best at it.
On top of their roles, they all must be dedicated to playing
defence and everyone is held accountable.
"We have a great combination of kids...but the priority for
everyone is defence," said Collinson. "Everyone has to step up
to the plate defensively regardless of their role."
Lasalle also tries hard to make the kids realize chances to
play on solid teams and compete for championships is rare and
should be cherished.
"Every team is unique," said Collinson. "Each year is
different. That's why we tell the girls to take it by the hand
and grasp the moment because you don't know if it will happen
again. Ultimately, it's the kids that do it. We just give them
the tools, get them in shape and motivate them...make them
believe they can do anything."
The Lasalle experience drills its way into the soul, making
a lasting impression.
"You never forget you're a Lancer," said guard Amanda
McDonald. "It's something that sticks with you everywhere you
go. Playing for Lasalle is a big part of my life and something
I just love to do."
Winning, although not always easy, breeds positive vibes and
enhances the learning experience.
"We strive to win too," said Collinson. "It helps develop
all the tools. By working hard...that gets people in the
winner's circle."
The school itself also plays a big factor.
"We've had so many teachers, students, friends as supporters
over the years," said Collinson. "It makes it easy for everyone
to go out and play and do their best. It's been phenomenal."
Lasalle loves to see their young athletes go out and make a
difference in the big world.
"We're trying to develop good people here besides good athletes," said Collinson.
