Both the Laurentian University men's and
women's basketball squads went winless over the
weekend.
On Saturday, the Lady Vees dropped a 69-57
game to the Guelph Gryphons.
The Lady Vees held a slim one-point lead at
half time, but came undone in the second half.
Tierney Hoo dropped in 12 points, which
official put her over the 1,000 mark in her illustrious
career.
She now stands in ninth place overall in
Ontario University Athletics (OUA) all time scoring.
The Lady Vees were back at on Sunday against
Brock University, but lost 79-69.
Laurentian turned the ball over 29 times,
which contributed to their demise.
Cassandra Carpenter lead the way with 17
points.
Hoo managed 16 points, which moved her to
eighth spot in OUA all time scoring.
"Today's game has been a definite setback
for the team," said head coach Mike Clarke in a press release.
"The only thing we can do right now is regroup and get ready
for Western."
The men didn't fair any better.
In fact, they lost both of their games as
well.
On Saturday, the men lost 71-62 to
Guelph.
Andrew Greig recorded 19 points for the
Voyageurs in the loss.
On Sunday, the men were looking to get in the
win column for the first time this season, but it didn't
happen.
Instead, they received a 87-57 thrashing at
the hands of the Brock University Badgers.
The game was already over by the end of the
first half, which saw the Badgers take a commanding 46-17
lead.
Once again, Greig was the main man for the
Voyageurs, as he sent the hoop mesh flying for 19 points.
Both squads will be back in action this
weekend, as they host their first home games.
The women and men face the University of
Western Ontario at the Ben Avery Gymnasium on Saturday. The
women play at 6 pm, and the men play at 8 pm.
It wasn't all bad news for the Laurentian
athletics scene.
The women's cross-country running team
competed in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)
Championships in Guelph.
The Lady Vees gave it their all and finished
13th overall.
Leila Angrand manged the best result for
Laurentian by placing 41st.
Her time might have been better had she not
been racing with a injured Achilles heel. She also suffered a
upper body injury as a result of a miss-step during the
race.
Kirsti Dolson also had a strong showing,
finishing 46th.
"Aside from Leila's injury, it was a
great way to finish the season," said head coach Dick Moss in a
press release. "The girls had their best race of the year and
every runner gave absolutely everything they had."
