LU hoops coach joins bench crew for national team

The Laurentian men's basketball coach Shawn Swords was recently named assistant coach for Canada's junior men's national team.

Last week, Swords was invited to participate at the team's training camp in Toronto, in preparation for the 2011 U19 World Championship Qualification in San Antonio, Texas.

The junior team left on June 22 for San Antonio and will play preliminary matches from June 26-28 against Uruguay, Puerto Rico and Brazil. Each game will be broadcast live via video streaming at www.fibaamericas.com.

"It is the greatest honour in sport to be able to represent your country,” Swords said, in a press release. “I am fortunate to be able to do this as a player and now as a coach. I look forward to helping in any way I can to assist these young Canadian athletes achieve their goals.”
