The Laurentian Voyageurs men's golf team started their 2008 season with a solid fourth place finish at the Waterloo Invitational over the weekend, shooting a two day total of 617.

Two Laurentian men finished in the top-10 with John Atherton shooting a combined 144 for a tie-for-second and Matt Bortolotto shooting a combined 151 for a tie-for-ninth.

Whistle Bear played much tougher on day two compared to the first round primarily due to gusting winds. Sunday proved to be a struggle for the Voyageurs as the team took 13 more shots than in round one to give them a two day total of 617.

Individually, Atherton (Toronto) tamed the bear in round two, shooting a one-under-par 71, en route to a tie-for second place with a combined score of 144, Bortolotto (Sudbury, Ont) was the only other Voyageur to register under 80 on the day shooting a 77.

His combined score of 151 was good enough for a tie-for-ninth place. Max Kallio (Lively, Ont) had a rough start and struggled to an 81, while Yves Fraser (Val Caron, Ont) and Shawn Lahaie (Alban, Ont) had a rough day shooting 86 and 88 respectively.

"It was a tough course and tough conditions, but the boys played well," said head coach Paul Schweyer, in a release.

The overall title went to the Western Mustangs with a team total of 582, while Queen's Patrick Forbes (Toronto) claimed the individual title with an impressive score of two-under 142 (70+72). Western's Charles Fitzsimmons (Toronto) finished tied with Atherton for second at even par 144.

The Voyageurs will tee it up again Monday, October 6th at the Cutten Club in Guelph at 10 a.m.
