The Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves are on an 11-game winning streak after defeating the New Liskeard Cubs Sunday afternoon 6-3 at Countryside Arena.

The first period saw the Nickel Capital Wolves leading 3-1 with goals by Ryan Johnston on a power play, followed by Andre Comtois and Steven Johnston. Mario Chaput scored the only marker for the Cubs.

Gabriel Rodrigues found the back of the net in the second period along with Johnston, who scored his second goal of the night. Mitchel McCrank added to the score board for the Cubs.

In the third period, Nickel Capital Wolves player Kyle Lekun added to their lead, while the Cubs would add another marker with a goal by Francis Julien. The Nickel Capital Wolves walked away with a 6-3 victory.

The Nickel Capital Wolves also sealed the deal for second place in the league after coming away with a 6-4 win over the North Bay Trappers Saturday evening.

"We're not disappointed with where we're at," said general manager Albert Corradini, but added that the team still has a long way to go to win the league.

"Now's an opportunity to try and work on some things, to try to get ready for the playoffs and try to get some guys playing into specific roles."

The last day of regular play in the league is Sunday Feb. 1, when the Nickel Capital Wolves will take on the first place Sault Ste. Marie North Stars.

Playoffs will begin the weekend of Feb. 6.

"We're going to take it one day at a time," Corradini said about approaching the playoffs.

The general manager said there is far more parity in the league this year compared to previous years.

"With that parity, you can't afford to look past anybody," he said, noting that all the teams are strong competitors

"Ultimately our goal, our objective is to get to the finals," Corradini said, but stressed they will take it one step at a time and try to stay focused.
