The Sudbury Wolves announced this week that they acquired current Flint Firebirds captain and Sudbury native Zacharie Giroux for a pair of third-round picks in 2026.

The Sudbury Wolves are back in action on Jan. 10, welcoming the Mississauga Steelheads to Sudbury Arena for a 7:05 p.m. tilt.

The Pack is coming off two big at-home wins last week. On Friday, the team welcomed the Brantford Bulldogs, winning 7-4 and claiming first place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference. Then, on Saturday, the Pack took on the Western Conference leader Kitchener Rangers, and battled back from a deficit to score five unanswered goals to win 7-5.

“The Mississauga Steelheads enter Wednesday’s game three points back of the Wolves for first in the Central Division,” the team said in a news release.

The Steelheads bring a lot of firepower on the ice.

“They’re led by 2024 NHL Draft prospect Luke Misa, who has 52 points (15 goals and 37 assists), and 2025 NHL Draft prospect Porter Martone, who’s recorded 47 points (28 goals and 19 assists).”

Fans at this Wednesday’s game will also get a chance to see two new Wolves in action. The team announced this week that they acquired current Flint Firebirds captain and Sudbury native Zacharie Giroux for a pair of third-round picks in 2026. As well, the Pack welcomes defencemen Donovan McCoy from the Peterborough Petes, in exchange for forward Caden Taylor and a conditional fourth round draft pick in 2027.

“We are thrilled to bring Zach Giroux home,” said Sudbury Wolves VP & GM Rob Papineau. “He … plays the game with skill and grit and pace every shift.”

Giroux was selected by Flint in the third round (57th overall) in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection  from the Sudbury Wolves Minor Midget AAA team where he scored 28 goals and added 27  assists for 55 points through 23 games. During his time with the Firebirds Zach played 168  games tallying a total of 141 points (51G-90A), a +19 and 112 penalty minutes. He was tapped as Firebirds captain this season.

As for McCoy, the 61, 200-lbs right-shot defender was drafted 15th overall by the Petes in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. During the 2022-23 season, he was part of the Peterborough team that hoisted the J.Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions.

Named captain this season, McCoy played in 65 games, recording 13-points and played 22 post-season games where he notched two goals, eight assists, good for 10 points. Prior to this season McCoy was invited to Calgary Flames development camp.

“We are really excited to add Donovan to the Sudbury Wolves,” Papineau said. “His leadership and experience as a captain and OHL champion will help bring our hockey team to the next level.”
