Here's a quick peek at the Sudbury Spartans and Sudbury Northerners football clubs.

The wait is finally over as the Spartans hit the road to play their first game of the 2006 season, against the defending Northern Football Conference (NFC) champions, the Tri-City Outlaws. Game time is 7 pm.

The Spartans made numerous significant moves in the off-season. Most notably bringing in new head coach Chris Bartolucci, who was a coaching wizard with St. Charles College for many years and won numerous high school football titles.

The Spartans went 0-8 last season. In 2005, Sudbury only managed to score 58 points (worst in the NFC) and allowed a staggering 340 points against (again, worst in the league).

The offence should get a boost in the arm as the team welcomes back former quarterback Paul Gauthier and running back Dave St. Amour. Coupled with stand out receiver Brandon Dougan, the three give the Spartans some serious bite and experience. The offence should be able to convert more plays into points with those three guys, and others, putting the ball into play.

The Spartans home opener goes Saturday, June 17.

The Northerners meanwhile, after sitting idle for a bye week, look to chop down the Limestone District Grenadiers this Saturday at Queen's Athletic Field. Game time is 7 pm.

The Northerners opened their 2006 season with a 43-13 loss to Essex two weeks ago.

Sudbury currently sits in fourth place in the Wettges Division of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).
