Billed as the largest all-women golf tournament north of Toronto, 152 ladies clad in pink hit the links at Idylwylde Golf and Country Club to raise funds for the Northern Cancer Foundation.
“It’s an amazing group of ladies out here,” HSN Foundation, NEO Kids Foundation & Northern Cancer Foundation community engagement and events specialist Kristofer Cacciotti told Sudbury.com of the Think Pink golf tournament’s participants.
“There were several teams on the waiting list, so there’s capacity to grow.”
Organizer Charmaine Gazdic-Querney said the annual event is supported by Idylwylde, which donates the use of golf carts, and is boosted by donations pledged by participants.
More than 100 of this year’s participants are Idylwylde members, with their guests coming from throughout Ontario to participate.
“Everybody here knows somebody who has been affected by cancer,” Gazdic-Querney said, adding that her own sister died earlier this year.
“It’s very important to me, and very important to this community.”
Gazdic-Querney said the annual tournament, now in its 12th year, has raised more than $32,000, and she said she hopes to see this year’s event raise at least $5,000.
All funds stay local, and Cacciotti said they’d go toward “leading cancer care,” vital equipment purchases and “world-class research.”
The Northern Cancer Foundation’s next big fundraising event will be the annual Luncheon of Hope at the Caruso Club on Nov. 14.
