About 700 local young hockey players will lace up their skates for the fourth annual Greater Sudbury Police Cup.
GSPS and Sudbury Playground Hockey League are joining forces for the tournament, which begins Jan. 18. The official puck-drop ceremony takes place at 1 p.m. at Countryside Arena. The emphasis at this tournament is placed on sportsmanship, fair play and equal opportunity.
The Police Cup provides an opportunity for the Greater Sudbury Police Service to make a positive impact with Sudbury youth, said the police service in a news release. This year, each participating player is asked to donate a non-perishable food item in order to give back to the community and replenish the food bank after the busy holiday season.
Donations will be also accepted from all attending hockey fans throughout the weekend, as the tournament is open to the public.
