Apparently, Kendyn Mashinter really did have a little bit more to give.

After capturing the midget boys 1500m at the city championships in a time of 4:35.77, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights freshman dropped his time in finishing first at NOSSA as well, crossing the line in 4:27.85.

Needing to find another gear in order to qualify for the event final at the 2017 OFSAA Track and Field Championships on Thursday in Belleville, Mashinter trimmed another six seconds off his NOSSA time, qualifying as the 10th seed overall at 4:21.88, a new personal best.

Had Mashinter posted that clocking earlier this month, he would have established a new record at both the SDSSAA and NOSSA meets. With the top four qualifiers at OFSAA all running at a sub 4:20 pace, the local product will be hard pressed to move many rungs up the ladder when the top 12 reconvene for the 1500m final late Friday afternoon.

The performance by Mashinter topped the SDSSAA charts on Day One, with a handful of others sliding into mid-teen placements. Despite fouling on his third throw, Tyson McFadden of Lo-Ellen heaved the shot put 12.35 metres, good for 14th place in a field of 24 athletes in the midget boys bracket.

Dario Beljo of Lockerby is gradually getting a handle on the pole vault. Posting heights of right around 2.30m in both of his preliminary meets, the Grade 9 AAA hockey player soared to 2.60m at OFSAA, good for 12th place overall.

After qualifying for the 400m final as a midget last June, Lucas Mrozewski found himself just on the outside in the junior division. His time of 53.20 left the Knights runner in 11th overall, roughly a second slower than the final qualifying time, but still in the top half of the provincial best.
