It's Go Time!
Here's a look at current news and
happenings in the OHL.
The OHL dished out its monthly awards earlier
this week, and the big winner was London's Rob Schremp, who
has absolutely taken the league by storm upon his arrival back
from the Edmonton Oilers camp.
Schremp was named Player of the Month for
October after racking up 14 goals and 41 points in just 10
games. Schremp's efforts in October also included an eight
point night when he scored two goals and six assists against
Toronto on Oct. 17.
The OHL Rookie of the Month for October is
London's Sergei Kostitsyn, who lead all OHL rookies in
scoring with nine goals and 21 points in 11 games.
The OHL Defenceman of the Month is
Peterborough's Peter Aston, who recorded three goals and 14
points in 10 games, while helping the Petes to first overall in
the OHL standings.
The OHL Goalie of the Month for October is
Saginaw's Ryan Daniels, who forged a record of 5-0-0 with a
paltry 1.57 goals-against-average and a .955 save
percentage.
The OHL also recognized the first winners of
the OHL Academic Players of the Month.
The winners are: Plymouth's Chris Terry,
Erie's Vince Scott, Barrie's Blake Parlett and
Belleville's Geoff Killing.
Here's a look at hot and cold teams and
players.
Peterborough is scorching right now, having
won seven straight games. The Petes are 9-1 in their last 10
games and hold first place overall in the OHL standings with a
record of 12-2-1-0, good for 25 points.
Saginaw is also red hot, having won six
straight games. The Spirit have a record of 8-2 in their last
10 games and are tied with London for second overall in the OHL
standings with 20 points. The Spirit are 10-3 on the
season.
London is also slapping teams around at will,
having won two straight games, but piling up an awesome 9-1
record in their last 10 games.
Owen Sound's Bobby Ryan, London's
David Bolland and Plymouth's John Vigilante are currently
the hottest players in the league as all three are currently on
13-game point scoring streaks.
Bolland has put up 17 goals and 39 points
during his 13 games. Ryan has 10 goals and 38 points in his
13-game streak. Vigilante has drummed up five goals and 23
points in his 13 games. All three will be in action tonight
looking to further the streaks.
Here's a peek at the bad boys of the OHL,
who are leading the league in penalty minutes.
Mississauga's Craig Cescon leads the way
with 73 minutes in 12 games. Kitchener's Boris Valabik is
second with 67 minutes in 11 games. London's Jordan Foreman
rounds out the top three with 66 minutes in 15 games.
The Sudbury Wolves lead the OHL in overall
penalty minutes with 487 through 15 games. Defenceman Ryan
hastings leads the Wolves in penalty minutes with 55 in 15
games.
Saginaw, one of the worst teams in the league
last year in all aspects of the game, have turned their ship
around this year and are playing sound hockey. Saginaw players
own the top three spots in the plus/minus category.
Matt Corrente and Patrick O'Neill lead
the OHL with a +14, followed by teammate, and former Wolf, Ryan
McDonough, who is +13.
Your weekly dose of OHL action takes place at
the Sudbury Arena tonight as the Sudbury Wolves host the
Belleville Bulls in the first game of a home-and-home series.
Game time is 7:30 pm.
The Wolves then hit the road to play the
Bulls in Belleville on Saturday (game time is 7:15 pm), and
round out the weekend with a tilt against the Ice Dogs in
Mississauga on Sunday afternoon. Game time is 2 pm.
All the road action can be heard live on 790
CIGM with Stew Kernan calling the plays.
