The latest scratch ticket game from the Ontario Lottery and
Gaming Corporation has just paid off big time for a few Greater
Sudbury athletes.
Four high performance amateur athletes will receive direct
financial assistance through the Quest for Gold Ontario Athlete
Assistance Program (OAAP).
The following athletes each received funding in the amount
of $2,650:
Lisa Furchner, basketball; Katya Herman, rowing; Angela Wong,
boccia; and
Tracy Horgan, curling.
"This is the kind of support our local athletes must have to
significantly improve their performance," said Sudbury MPP Rick
Bartolucci in a news release.  "This money will help
defray costs for these dedicated role models. We should be very
proud of our athletes and their dedication."
Provincewide, more than 850 athletes will receive Quest for
Gold funding. Roughly $2.9 million from the Quest for Gold
sport lottery will help athletes cover living, training and
post-secondary tuition costs.
Athletes will receive approximately $1.9 million from the
lottery in direct financial assistance. The Canadian Sport
Centre, Ontario branch, will receive about $558,000 to provide
enhanced coaching and the Sports Alliance of Ontario will
receive just over $279,000 to facilitate training and
competitive opportunities.
"I am truly honoured to have recently received generous
funding from the government's Quest for Gold Athlete Assistance
Program," said grant recipient Tracy Horgan in a news
release.  "Knowing our province supports us will motivate
us even more to train hard and improve ourselves to represent
our province to the best of our ability."
More than 6,000 additional athletes will benefit from
increased access to better qualified coaches and the enhanced
training and competitive opportunities components of the
program.
