Sudburians win athlete of the week honours

Matt Bortolotto of the men's golf team and Erica Duczeminski of the Lady Vees soccer team have been named Laurentian's Keg Steakhouse and Bar Athletes of the Week for the period of October 6 to 12.

Matt Bortolotto of the men's golf team and Erica Duczeminski of the Lady Vees soccer team have been named Laurentian's Keg Steakhouse and Bar Athletes of the Week for the period of October 6 to 12.

Duczeminski, who is from Sudbury, netted a pair of goals in the Lady Vees dominant 4-0 win over the Trent Excalibur on Saturday in Peterborough.

She backed up that performance with another strong defensive game against the number six ranked team in the CIS, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Despite falling 2-0, Duczeminski rose to the occasion as the Lady Vees were missing two starting defenders and another went down during the game.

"She just played solid in the back, winning countless tackles and is very deserving of this award," said head coach Rob Gallo in a release.

Bortolotto, also a Sudbury native, turned in his best score in his two year career at the Guelph Invitational held on October 6th at the Cutten Club. He fired a two over 72 which was good enough to put him in a tie for second overall.

He also led the Voyageurs who finished in a tie for sixth place as a team, just two shots off the pace. The field featured several of the OUA's best squads as 10 teams competed at the event.

Duczeminski will lead the Lady Vees into a hectic week as they charge towards the playoffs.

On Wednesday, October 15 the Lady Vees will travel to North Bay to play their northern rival the Nipissing Lakers, Saturday October 18 they will host the Carleton Ravens who are locked in a playoff battle with Laurentian, while Sunday October 19 will see the Lady Vees host a rematch against the Trent Excalibur.

Bortolotto will look to continue his momentum as he swings into the Laurier Invitational at Rebel Creek in Kitchener on October 14 with his Voyageurs teammates before heading to Hamilton and looking for the ultimate goal of winning the OUA championships on October 20 and 21.
