Sudbury sprinter captures world record by three seconds

Sudbury's Derek Lalonde set a world record yesterday for the fastest 50-km run on a treadmill, edging out the previous record by close to three seconds.

Lalonde's Tread for Life run, and world record attempt, was all done to help raise awareness for blood donation and the overwhelming need for donors.

The previous record of three hours, 41 minutes and 53 seconds, was held by American Geoff Weber.

Lalonde is a worker with Canadian Blood Services in Sudbury, and sees the lack of blood donors every day.

"I wanted to do something for cancer and to raise awareness about donating blood," said the 33-year-old. "To help, people don't have to give money. They can give blood, and they should learn more about blood donation. Blood and blood products, among other things, go to help cancer patients."
