Sudbury Synchro successfully defended their gold medal performance this past weekend at the Hilton Worldwide Invitational Synchro Meet, finishing first in a field of 10 teams in the 14-year-age group category.
The Sudbury team scored 59.900, with Guelph sliding into second place with a score of 59.233, much to the delight of coach Chelsea Wandziak.
Participating clubs from Ontario included the Central/East/West and Northern areas of the province, as well as clubs from Val D'or (Quebec), Portland (Oregon), and even some representation from the Barbados.
The Sudbury 13-15 team included Amy Lacelle, Emily Binks, Megan Sarmatiuk, Stacie Kohan, Laurel Duguay, Bronwyn Ashley, Georgia Speck, Madison Hood and Sarah Ieropoli.
The locals also returned with a silver medal, thanks to the 13-15 duet showing by the pairing of Ieropoli and Binks (coach - Lindsay Wandziak). Placing second in a field of 26 teams, the northern swimmers recorded a score of 62.233, behind only a Waterloo tandem at 63.0667.
Meanwhile, the next wave of young Sudbury talent is rapidly working its way up the ranks, as the 10-and-under team coached by Wandziak finished 12th in a field of 22 teams, earning a final score of 51.9667.
The squad included Mya Nebre, Sophia Flabiano, Julianne Crittenden, Amy Seguin, Heidi Fink, Rachelle Prevost and coach Wandiak.
There was also some Sudbury success to celebrate as a side component of the meet, with Amy Lacelle working her way through phase 2 of the provincial trials and on to phase 3.
Placing 11th among the 33 age 11-12 swimmers vying for a top 16 score in figures, Lacelle earned herself a chance to compete at the next camp in June, with 10 athletes in that grouping to be selected for a provincial team that will compete, in Edmonton, from July 26-29.
