The Sudbury Youth Basketball Association (SYBA) JAM Girls U15 No. 1 team started its season in fine form by capturing the Brantford CYO Invitational on the weekend of Jan. 13 after defeating Etobicoke 54-52 in overtime in the championship game.
The JAM earned its spot in the gold-medal game by beating Burlington, Brantford and Milton in the preliminary round.
The championship game was a test of character as the girls dug themselves an early and deep hole with a slow start, but clawed their way back to a tie at half time.
With less than three minutes remaining in the game and down by six, Sudbury made a number of clutch baskets, including a three-point shot with 14 seconds remaining to put the game into overtime.
The JAM held their opponents to only two points in overtime to secure the victory.
The athleticism and intensity of this very talented group was on full display for much of the week end, according to a news release.
The JAM outworked and outran their opponents and benefited from contributions from every team member.
The highlight of the weekend was the outstanding individual and team defensive effort.
The girls are justifiably proud of their achievements on the defensive end of the court.
The SYBA JAM return to action in Newmarket, Feb. 1-3.
