Curling fans in the Sudbury area are in for a treat as the 2023 Nickel City Curling Championships began this week at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex in Sudbury; both ice pads will be used. There will be no less than three national curling events taking place from March 15 through to March 26.

These include the U Sports Curling Canada University Championships, which is on from March 15 to 19, and the CCAA Curling Canada College Championships, also happening from March 15 to 19.

These events will see 32 of Canada's top university and college teams in competition, consisting of eight college women's teams, eight college men's teams along with eight university women's teams and eight university men's teams.

Curling Canada said these athletes are the future of the sport of curling "and are the next generation of Canadian, world and Olympic Champions."

Also, as official hosts of the event Laurentian University will have teams on the men's and women's side of the University roster.

After a short break on March 20, another national event, the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will take place from March 21 to March 26.

Curling Canada said this will include 32 of Canada's very best mixed doubles teams competing for a national title, and fight to earn the right to represent Canada at the World Mixed Doubles Championship in Gangneung, Korea, April 22-29, 2023.

The Canadian Mixed Doubles will host a star-studded field with dozens of Canadian, world and Olympic champions competing, said Curling Canada. Full details of the draw schedule for the Mixed Doubles event will be announced next week.

Tickets for spectators for all events are still available at greatersudbury.ca/tickets. Full-event passes, combined passes (access to both weeks), full-day, and half-day passes are available.

The event also has a hashtag — #2023NickelCityCurls — and a Facebook Page, keeping fans up-to-date on everything related to the event.
