The Nickel City Minor Atom AA Tigers captured their second tournament of the year recently, overcoming a familiar northern Ontario opponent in the final.
The Tigers added a gold-medal performance at the Guelph Power Play Tournament to a victory earlier this season in Pickering, racking up five wins and a tie along the way.
The Nickel City crew wasted little time getting the offence in full gear in Guelph, blasting the Centre Wellington Fusion 8-3 in their Friday morning opener and completing day one on a winning note with a 4-1 triumph over the St. Catharines Warriors.
After playing to a scoreless draw with the Burlington Eagles Saturday morning, the Tigers closed out preliminary round action with a 3-1 win over the Pickering Panthers.
The team's record of 3-0-1 was enough to earn them a berth in the semifinals, drawing a rematch with the Eagles. Once again, the locals would keep Burlington off the board, but this time around, plenty of offensive support was forthcoming.
Bradley Brunet and Bradey Smith scored two goals apiece, with Nolan Moxam adding a solo marker as Nickel City blanked Burlington 5-0.
Battling the North Bay Trappers in the grand finale, the Tigers received third-period goals from Josh Kavanagh and Tyler Roussel, walking away with the hardware thanks to a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Gateway City squad. Smith added a first-period tally for the winners.
