Hello fans, it's time for another heap of
OHL stats, news and happenings.
Let's start with some Sudbury Wolves
stuff first.
The Wolves have won four in a row and they
have four players currently enjoying point scoring
streaks.
Sniper Ben Pouliot has seven goals and 10
points in his last six games. Kevin Baker has piled up six
goals and 10 points in his last 10 games. Defenceman Marc Staal
has one goal and five points in his last three games. Finally,
Nick Foligno has ripped up one goal and four points in his last
three games.
The team is hot and the players are hot, the
only question now is will they stay hot long enough for an
extended run into the playoffs? Only time will tell.
Speaking of hot teams, how about those
Windsor Spitfires. Here's a team that has been spinning its
wheels for the last couple of seasons (longer for those who
have really followed the club), but is now actually earning a
lot of respect.
The Spitfires' season started on a bad
note when a hazing incident got out of hand and led to the
eventual trades of Steve Downie and Akim Aliu and left the team
in a big mess.
Some organizations could have just packed in
the season, but Windsor got through the trouble and are a
playoff contending squad. Windsor has forged a solid 8-2 record
in their last 10 games, including a modest two-game winning
streak.
They have a record of 20-22-2-2. Last season
the team only won 26 games.
One of the biggest reasons for the rise of
the Spitfires has been the play of goalie Anthony Guadagnolo.
The former Ottawa goalie has been nothing short of spectacular
for Windsor. Guadagnolo had an unbelievable January, going 7-2
with a sizzling 2.29 goals-against-average (GAA) and a beaming
.925 save percentage.
Overall, Guadagnolo is 17-9-2-2 with a 2.58
GAA and a .919 save percentage.
Another team that is piping hot are the
Kitchener Rangers. After going 8-1-1 in their last 10 games,
the Rangers have crept into the very elite of the OHL
standings. With 62 points, Kitchener is tied with Barrie for
third overall in the league. London is second with 64 points,
while Peterborough still leads with 67 points.
The race for the best regular season squad is
still up for grabs. It will be an interesting run for league
bragging rights down the stretch.
From hot to cold, the Erie Otters are sinking
fast in the Western Conference standings.
The Otters has gone 0-7-0-1 in their last
eight games, which included a 9-4 pounding at the hands of
Brampton.
Erie is second last in the Western Conference
and could end up dead last if Sarnia, who's just five
points behind, catches fire and puts together a few more
wins.
Brampton's Wojtek Wolski is the OHL
Player of the Week. Wolski, 19, chalked up six goals and 13
points in only three games. Wolski's stats were bolstered
after he feasted on the aforementioned lowly Erie Otters by
scoring four goals and seven points during a 9-4 Brampton
victory.
Wolski now has 22 goals and 64 points in 33
games.
The CHL has announced another round of
segment winners for the Canada Post Three Star Cup
winners.
The OHL winners were: Belleville's John
Hughes (East Division), Brampton's Wolski (Central
Division), London's Adam Dennis (Midwest Division) and
Windsor's
Cal O'Reilly (West Division).
Each winner receives a $100 donation from
Canada Post for the league's education program.
The race for leading scorer is heating up
quite nicely. London's Rob Schremp was running away with
the title, but after missing several games because of the World
Junior Championship, Schremp has some company at the top of the
pile in the form of Kitchener's Evan McGrath.
Schremp has 37 goals and 96 points in 35
games. He's also currently on a 10-game point scoring
streak which has seen him put up 23 points during the
span.
McGrath, on the other hand, has 27 goals and
85 points in 45 games. The centre is on an impressive tear
through the month of January with 21 points in 11 games.
McGrath also has nine points in his last three games.
My money is still on Schremp, but, again,
only time will tell.
McGrath will be pushed by Schremp's
teammates, David Bolland (83 points) and Dylan Hunter (80
points) as the season wears down.
Your local dose of OHL action takes place
Friday night (Jan. 27) as the Wolves host the Barrie Colts in
another classic Central Division battle. Game time at the
Sudbury Arena is 7: 30 pm.
That's it for Go Time this week
fans.
