The Sudbury Wolves won two out of three games
on the road this past weekend, a monumental event considering
one of the teams they beat are the best team in Major Junior
hockey.
The wild weekend began last Thursday in
Windsor, where the Wolves nipped the Spitfires 4-3 in
overtime.
The game was filled with fights and rough
play, including a final buzzer line brawl, resulting in
numerous suspensions.
Zack Stortini, Alex Eaton, Marc Staal, Devin
Didiomete and Adam McQuaid were all given a minimum two-game
suspension for their role in the clash.
Further ruling on the suspensions is expected
to be handed down today (Monday) from the OHL head
office.
Coach and general manager Mike Foligno was
also suspended for two games for his part.
Rafal Martynowski, Nick Foligno, Alex Eaton
and Kyle Musselman scored for the Wolves.
Even with the suspensions and several other
players out of the line up due to the flu bug, the Wolves
marched into London on Friday night and stopped the Knights
record unbeaten streak at 31 games be pummelling them
5-2.
The Knights were missing leading scorer Corey
Perry, Rob Schremp, and Danny Syvret.
Bobby Chaumont took on the role as giant
killer when he scored the game-winning goal against the Knights
after a sweet set-up from Foligno.
Martynowski, (two goals), Ryan McDonough and
Ben Pouliot also scored for the Wolves in the dramatic
win.
Wolves' goalie Patrick Ehelechner was
stellar in the game, making 34 saves.
The Wolves closed out their road trip and
2004 schedule on Sunday in Brampton against the
Battalion.
The Wolves were soundly defeated 7-2.
Chaumont and Luke Dubbin replied for the
Wolves, who are now on their Christmas break.
The Wolves next game is Wednesday, Dec. 29
against the Kitchener Rangers at the Sudbury Arena.
Game time is 7:30 pm.
