Wolves trounce Sting 7-3 on the road

Sudbury got a huge win over Sarnia Friday night

Alex Pharand scored his 10th of the season with 7:55 remaining in the second period to increase the lead for the Wolves by a score of 6-1. He would score his 2nd goal of the game with 4:02 remaining in the third period to seal a 7-3 win for the Sudbury Wolves.

The Sudbury Wolves were in action on Friday night on the road against the Sarnia Sting hoping to improve on an already impressive season. 

Jakub Vondras got the start in goal for the Wolves while the Sting went with Karsen Chartier. 

Sarnia’s Kai Schwindt got the scoring started 1:53 into the game with his 5th goal of the season to give the Sting an early 1-0 lead. 

With 12:23 remaining in the first period, Nathan Villeneuve tied the game for the Wolves with his 10th goal of the season. 

Then at 14:27 into the opening period, David Goyette scored his 22nd goal of the season to put Sudbury on top with a 2-1 lead, which is where the teams stood heading into the first intermission. 

Just over one minute into the second period, Sudbury native Zach Giroux scored his 16th goal of the season, and first as a member of the Sudbury Wolves after being traded from the Flint Firebirds to extend Sudbury’s lead to 3-1. 

At the 4:36 mark of the middle frame, Chase Coughlan scored his 7th of the season to make the score 4-1 for the Sudbury Wolves, and then at 9:31, Giroux scored his 2nd of the game to give the Wolves a commanding 5-1 lead. 

Alex Pharand scored his 10th of the season with 7:55 remaining in the second period to increase the lead for the Wolves by a score of 6-1. 

Making the score shift a little, Kai Schwindt scored his 2nd goal of the game for Sarnia to make the score 6-2 at the 14:54 mark of the second period. 

And with 3:06 remaining in the middle frame Sarnia cut the Wolves’ lead down to 3 with Carter Kostuch’s 3rd of the season making the score 6-3 with one period left to play. 

But Pharand would score his 2nd goal of the game with 4:02 remaining in the third period to seal a 7-3 win for the Sudbury Wolves. 

With the win, the Sudbury Wolves hold a record of 21 wins, 12 losses, 3 overtime losses, and 2 shootout losses on the season, good for first place in the Ontario Hockey League’s Central Division, first place in the Eastern Conference, and third place overall in the Ontario Hockey League.

The Wolves next take the ice in Windsor against Djibril Toure and the Windsor Spitfires on Saturday, January 13th with a scheduled start time of 7:05 p.m.
